Tiptoe Through the Tulips

Many of us are busy celebrating Easter and Passover with our loved ones today. Were you able to find, and reuse some of last year’s Springtime decor? Did any of you put a vintage spin on the holiday, either in your decorations or table settings? I would love to see your pictures!

I’ve been in retail over thirty years and yet, still, I am staggered by the amount Americans spend on holidays. I think that these figures are why so many of us love Thanksgiving, as it is a time for family, friends, and fellowship, without the mad dash (except to the market, of course) for trinkets and toys and novelties to make the children and the child in each of us glow. Did you know that Americans spend 16.4 BILLION dollars on apparel, food and decorations for Easter alone? Wow. Just Wow. That is a whole lotta PEEPS people; in fact consumers, like you and me spend $2.2 billion on jelly beans (I know ltd7 contributed to that number) chocolate bunnies and flavorful chick-shaped Peeps. Consumers this holiday will also spend $2.4 billion on gifts, $1.1 billion on flowers, $998 million on decorations and $695 million on greeting cards! Boggles the mind!
Easter and Passover are, however, holidays that can be as simple as a carton of dyed eggs, maybe trying our hand at new designs and methods for our dyes, placed carefully in a recycled basket from the attic and used as a centerpiece. Or it can be a lavish affair with large beautifully cellophane wrapped baskets for all to enjoy. I love placing a wreath on my front door in the Spring, adding a vintage rabbit to my kitchen island decor and yes, giving Erika a basket of small items sure to please her on Easter Sunday, so I am no exception to trends.

But seriously, I do believe, at least for my family, keeping it simple and not berating myself for failed Martha Stewart decorated eggs is the way to go. Fellowship in our crazy, never enough time world, is a worthy endeavor, and even if the eggs are slightly cracked, I “cook with love,” and decorate with my heart…and that is sometimes, if not always…perfectly enough.
